ST. TAMMANY
52" high x 29" long x 10" deepThis large carving is very similar to many well recognized antique weathervanes. Tammany was a noble native American Chief who predated the American Revolution. When the British fought under the flag of Saint Andrew, the colonists decided to adopt their own "saint": Tammany - hence the popular proliferation of this figure in early American folk art. "Saint Tammany" is carved from pine and has maple headdress, bow, and arrow shafts. The arrow feathers are copper. The entire piece is hand painted with numerous layers of warm amber-toned paint.
